The thing you hammered with a hammer is just a metal cap that is sunk in by 2-4 mm and can be removed by rotating it with pliers.
The cap has a plastic breather for air release, which sometimes gets lost, leaving the hole open.
On the other side (where the rod of the lever goes in) should be an oil seal.
In this tiny cylinder there are no bearings - only grease.
At the other end of the lever in another such 'tiny cylinder' is a closed rubber bushing that runs the entire length and nothing else.
I am telling you as someone who has disassembled this caliper to the nuts and bolts :)

P.S. If you've flipped the caliper (putting the right one on the left, etc.), your main task is to ensure it's bled (removal of air), otherwise you will not have brakes. So the bleed nipple should always be up. Or bleed it when removed :) with nipple up.
