
Since the moment of buying the car, the exhaust system didn't muffle the sound at all. It was particularly loud on the left rear side inside the cabin. On forums, people wrote that dirt gets thrown from under the wheel onto the muffler and it starts to rust over time. I hadn't had the time or desire to take it off and see what the issue was. Loud noise - fine by me, but the passenger sitting behind, specifically a girl, kept complaining about how loud it was. But she eventually got used to it.
Lately, the muffler has been making metallic clanking noises.
It was then that I had to start repairs.
I made a ramp from available materials and removed the muffler.
Now everything is clear.
Using an angle grinder, I cut out the rusted parts, welded them up with stainless steel pieces using argon, and wrapped around the muffler a sheet of 1.2 mm thick stainless steel, thoroughly welding it all together with argon arc welding.
I put everything back in place, and as a result - silence. In other words, it actually became unusually quiet both inside the cabin and outside on the street.
The only nuances: now there's no flap inside the muffler, so it would be even quieter if there were one. During smooth driving, the difference is barely noticeable, but on the left side, the exhaust is slightly louder. Because there's no flap in the muffler, steam (or smoke) clearly escapes from it, while the right muffler hardly emits any vapor at all.
At dynamic drive, the sound is loud enough to hear the engine, without needing anything else.
