Those who own 80s models are likely familiar with their common issue - upon startup, the solenoid clicks but the starter does not engage. My bike was no exception and this problem became chronic, recently becoming very frustrating as a successful start on the first try had become rare, requiring me to click the ignition switch fifty times before the starter would finally engage. From reading forums, I already knew what caused it - namely, a loss of voltage somewhere along the path to the solenoid, leaving it without enough power to close its contacts. The solution is simple: install a relay that directly connects the battery to the solenoid. Some kind soul even drew up a schematic for it. I opted for a powerful relay and thicker wires. After half an hour of soldering, my starter no longer acts up and now starts the engine with just one click!
