The new 2UR-FSE V8 engine was specially designed for the Lexus LS600hl, based on the standard 4.6-liter engine from the Lexus LS460 model. The displacement ended up being a whopping 5.0 liters, which became possible by increasing the piston stroke by 6.5 mm. The pistons, connecting rods, and crankshaft were modified: to accommodate the drive for the front axle, the oil pan design was changed, and for reducing vibrations, the engine mounts were improved. The block was cast from a lightweight and high-strength aluminum alloy, while the cylinder head is made of magnesium. In pursuit of better performance figures in terms of power and torque, as well as reduced fuel consumption and harmful emissions, electronics were tasked with varying the length of the intake manifold, and for phasing control, a flexible and fast electric actuator was used to rotate the intake camshaft (VVT-iE). The exhaust camshaft is still shifted hydraulically (VVT-I). A D-4S fuel injection system with two injectors per cylinder manages the engine's diet.
The output of the 5.0-liter V8 engine is 394 hp (290 kW), that of the electric motor is 224 hp (165 kW), and the total cumulative power of the system amounts to a formidable 445 hp (327 kW).
