They rattle. As cars age, almost all racks emit noise during movement. To the credit of the manufacturer, the noise (usually) is not critical. It's mainly due to wear in seals, but there can be more serious issues like bearing failure on the rack shaft.

I received this rack as a gift from a good friend last year. From its appearance, it was either completely worn out or fine. Kept as unwanted spare parts. I decided to disassemble and check for repair possibilities. There is no play on the worm gear (which is reassuring), but there is longitudinal movement. Clearly felt oscillation along the rack.

In terms of tools, traditionally, but a large hex key is needed to unscrew the hydraulic chamber plug and a multi-grip wrench for removing the lock nut on the rack position regulator.

To the point

Patient

the tie rods, end links, boot, and torn bushings have been removed

during the crimping of high-pressure tubes pay attention to copper spacers and don't lose them

unscrew the lock nut and plug of the regulator carefully watch for a spring which will pop out like magic.

then unscrew the hydraulic chamber plug

followed by unscrewing the worm gear bolts carefully watching the needle bearing, which is bound to disintegrate. No big deal, it's disposable and needs replacing.

after that remove the rack taking off the outer seal and poking at the inner one. I had this contraption made from a steel rod. Carefully watch for the limit stop washer which will come out along with the seal.
